The Southwest Ohio VFW Memorial Team was founded on April 24, 1966, at VFW Post 6069 in Lebanon, Ohio. Ralph Palmer was elected the first Commander with Sam Warmoth, Adjutant. Members from Posts 7479 in Loveland, 8202 in Morrow, and 9622 in Mason also joined the team.
Based at the Gregory J. Missman VFW Post 9630 in Batavia,
Ohio, and led by Commander Randy Fannin, the team consists of 24 active veteran
volunteers from various VFW and American Legion posts. In 2025, the team
received 237 requests for military honors and conducted a record 206 services,
honoring 11 World War II veterans, 20 Korean War veterans, 41 Vietnam veterans,
3 Gulf War veterans, and 3 veterans of the Global War on Terrorism. The team
regretfully declined 31 requests because of scheduling conflicts and was proud
to coordinate honors with active-duty and reserve military personnel 23 times.
Families are encouraged to request these services through their Funeral Directors when making burial arrangements. Proof of military service, such as DD-214, is required. The team does not charge deceased veterans’ families for services, and no team member receives compensation for their services. While the services are free, the team accepts donations to help cover expenses.
